The Chemistry Department was established at the Vilnius branch of the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute in 1963. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ipolitas Nickus was its first head.

In 1969 the Vilnius branch separated from the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute to became the Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute with the Chemistry Department as one of its constituents. Since 1974 the Department was headed by Prof. Dr. Habil. Povilas Norkus. The researches at the Department became directed mainly to chemical analysis and techniques of quantitative analysis of noble metals.

In 1991 the Chemistry Department was incorporated into the Department of Building Materials headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Albinas Gailius. Since 1995 the Department was headed by Prof. Dr. Habil. Algimantas Kazragis. Development of new thermal insulating building materials and their study were the main research topics during this period.

The Department of Building Materials was split to form the Department of Chemistry and Bioengineering on 1996. The new Department was headed by Prof. Algimantas Kazragis.

On 2001 Prof. Dr. Habil. Juozas Kulys, full member of Lithuanian Academy of Sciences became the head of the Department. Biotechnology, bioinformatics, and biological simulations became the major fields of scientific activities at the Department.

In 2001 the Bioinformatics research laboratory headed by the corresponding member of the Lithuanian Academy of Science Prof. Dr. Habil. Vladas Algirdas Bumelis is established.

In 2012 “The joined laboratory for cells technologies” of Vilnius University and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University is established (VGTU representatives in the laboratory council are Prof. Juozas Kulys and Assoc. Prof. Evaldas Liutkevičius).
