About department

The history of the Department is traced to the year 1962, when the Vilnius subdivision of Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (KPI) was established. Academic staff is 16, including 9 Associate Professors and 7 Lecturers. Administrative staff is 3.
     The department of Engineering Graphics makes it possible for the students of different study programmes to learn graphics disciplines which form spatial thinking, provide knowledge about preparation and keeping in order technical graphical documents and which are also basics of fundamental engineering training.
       At the second level of Information Science Engineering studies which have been carried out at the department of Engineering Graphics since 1993, Masters of Engineering and Computer Graphics are trained. Program are accredited by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania.
       A group of the department teachers analyses and prepares Lithuanian standards of technical graphical documents at the Technical committee LST TK 30 “Technical Drawings” of Standardization Department of Lithuania.
       In 1991 on the department’s initiative the Association of the Baltic States graphics chairs International Association BALTGRAF was founded.

Workplaces of department employees are:
  • SRL-I 611 – head of Department of Engineering Graphics Assoc. prof. Daiva Makutėnienė;
  • SRL-I 611, 612, 615 – teachers of department.

Engineering Graphics department taught engineering graphics disciplines for undergraduate first and second year students in Architecture, Construction, Transport engineering and Mechanics faculties. In general Engineering Graphics name the graphical disciplines developing a three-dimensional thinking, providing a technical knowledge of graphics design and management, is a fundamental pre-engineering basis. Consistent and methodically sound in this common Engineering Graphics name is the discipline taught a design (graphic modelling) theoretical basis (Descriptive Geometry), a technical requirements for graphical documentation (Technical Drawing) and computer performance of graphical documents (Computer Graphics). Since 1993 at Engineering Graphics department there are postgraduate studies, which held engineering and computer graphics masters. Master students studies Graphic management, applied graphics technology, Computer aided design models and algorithms, Computer aided design technology and other graphic-related disciplines. The department liaises with its counterparts in Lithuania and the other Baltic countries university graphic departments, preparing a joint seminars and conferences. For a long time chair of scientific work area was related to the adaptation of first year students in university, studies of students mastering of knowledge and graphic skills. After an intensive deployment of computer technology, this subject also has become a major new face and is related to computer technologies not only in design, but in the educational process also. In 1991 of the initiative of Department the Association of Engineering Graphic departments of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia technical universities (BALTGRAF) was set up. This Association every 2 years (In Vilnius 1994, 1998, 2004 and 2009) is organizing an international conferences and publish a collection of scientific works „Engineering Graphics BALTGRAF“. After Lithuanian‘s integration into European Union has become an important standards–setting instruments (in this case technical drawing standards) into line with International and European requirements. Group Department staff analyzes and prepare technical product documentation Lithuanian standards. At the Department since 1993 has been operating Lithuanian Standards Board (LSD) Technical Committee (TC30) „Technical product documentation“ (president assoc. prof. dr. P. Gerdžiūnas). The Committee participates in an International Standardisation Organization (ISO) activities. Since 1996, the department is an International Society for Geometry and Graphics member. At the department have been prepared and defended three doctor thesis: Daiva Makutėnienė (head assoc. prof. dr. L. Čiupaila) 2000, Gerūta Kazakevičiūtė-Januškevičienė (2000), Rytė Žiūrienė (head assoc. prof. dr. L. Čiupaila) 2002.
